Men’s Core Agenda and Homework

Congratulations on your decision to participate in The Men's Core Program!

The Core is a unique program for men who have struggled with narcissistic and emotional abuse and seek to overcome these patterns of behavior, becoming healthier men.

We believe emotionally abusive behavior is learned and, since it is learned, it can be unlearned, but not before taking full responsibility for it. That is what this 14-week group is largely about—owning and eliminating abusive behavior.

It is our privilege to lead you in this opportunity to grow and become healthier men. During the next 14 weeks, you will have the opportunity to share your story, hear other men share their stories and make critical decisions that will impact you and your family.

The Bible says: Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins. (1 Peter 4:8, NLT)

Below is the agenda for each week’s session. Your full participation is needed to make the progress you are desiring. Full participation in the group, including completing all homework assignments, is required to receive the Certificate of Completion at the end of the group.

You have much to do! We will be doing weekly assignments that will challenge you to delve deeper into your emotional life. You will be asked to look critically at your own behaviors and understand your defensive reactions, which we have found often leads to emotional abuse.

You may enter this group with mixed feelings and motives---that is okay. Showing up is a huge first step upon which you can build. We hope you have come desiring to learn how to function in the ‘best possible version of you.’ We believe if you grow and function from ‘best possible version of you,’ everyone will experience the change. You will feel better, and your loved ones will see this change and benefit from it.

Additionally, there are three things needed for the Core to work effectively:

First, you need to be open to the experience of seeing things in a new way. You need to have a conversion experience. “I was blind but now I see.” You will have to begin to see that you have created many of the problems you are now facing and that you are needing to make some qualitative changes.

Second, you need to be transparent and encourage others to be transparent as well. Groups are unique opportunities to learn from and challenge one another. Come prepared to participate fully.

Third, you need to have hope that as you change for the better your marriage will also change for the better. We at the Marriage Recovery Center have a saying, “When we change, everything changes, and every change, changes everything.” We believe that if you are emotionally healthy and loving in your relationship it will improve and you will better reflect the image of God that is in you.

We are committed to your satisfaction with the treatment process. We will check in with you after each session to determine your satisfaction with the counseling process. We will ask at the end of each week how you are feeling about the direction of the therapy and adjust, as necessary. We encourage you to share concerns about the process as well as what changes you would like to see.

Respectfully Yours,
